JBLM plans late-night firings

Joint Base Lewis-McChord will be conducting late-night firing Wednesday and Thursday this week.

There will be demolitions and firing of 155mm Howitzer mortars.

Increased levels of activity will be noticed during the evening hours, and firing will be conducted from one point on the base.

This is normally scheduled and required training, which allows military members to practice and improve skills required during combat.

The Yelm Food Co-op: A greater vision

The Yelm Food Co-op: A greater vision

Is the idea of a food sustainable community really that absurd?

If you had asked me that a week ago on one of my fast food excursions, I would have said, “Absolutely! Just the thought of a community not drooling over Big Macs, steeped in grease, is absurd.”

But, in actuality, the town of Yelm is growing ever closer to reaching that goal; one set forth by the Yelm Food Co-op.

A Bit of History

In 2005, the Co-op started as an idea to create a way for the community to purchase healthy organic food. In 2007, that idea became a reality; the co-op opened its doors in the Frontier Village Shopping Center.  Last week, the shop moved again: now located in the same building as Gordon’s Garden Center (308 East Yelm Avenue). The Co-op is run entirely by volunteers, with the exception of a couple of paid employees.

Mother's Day means more sun, continues through start of work week

Mother's Day means more sun, continues through start of work week

Happy Mother's Day!

We are in for some wonderful weather for getting outside.

Plan on sunny skies today with highs in the mid-70s to low-80s in many spots.  The warmest areas will be in the south Sound.

The strong ridge of high pressure will stay locked in for Monday with highs rising a few degrees.

Even Tuesday is looking mostly sunny with a few high clouds toward the end of the day.  It isn't until late Wednesday that the ridge breaks down enough to allow a stronger onshore flow to bring us more clouds and cooler temps.  By Thursday morning we could even have some areas of mist.
